The short version

  • Members of federally recognized tribes can enroll, or change plans, once a month all year.
  • From 100% to 300% of the federal poverty level, plans have no deductibles, copays or coinsurance.
  • From 300% to 400%, plans have lower out-of-pocket costs.
  • Care from Indian Health Service, tribal and urban Indian programs has no out-of-pocket cost.

Who these protections are for

Most of these protections are for members of federally recognized tribes and Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) shareholders. Some also apply to anyone eligible for Indian Health Service, tribal or urban Indian health programs.

Colorado is home to two federally recognized tribes: the Southern Ute Indian Tribe and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe. Members of tribes based in other states have the same protections here.

Enroll in any month

You don't have to wait for open enrollment. Households with a tribal member have a special enrollment period that's open once a month, all year.

After you enroll, you can change plans up to once a month. Changes take effect on the first day of the next month.

Plans with no out-of-pocket costs

With household income from 100% to 300% of the federal poverty level, your plan has no deductible, copays or coinsurance. Between 300% and 400%, it has lower out-of-pocket costs.

The savings can go on any plan sold through Connect for Health Colorado. You may still pay a monthly premium after any tax credit. Bronze plans have the lowest premiums, so they can be the best value with these savings.

Care from an Indian Health Service, tribal or urban Indian provider has no out-of-pocket cost at any income.

Health First Colorado and CHP+

Health First Colorado and CHP+ have their own protections. If you can get services from an Indian health care provider, you pay no premiums or out-of-pocket costs. Most Indian trust income and resources don't count toward eligibility.

You can keep using your Indian Health Service, tribal or urban Indian clinic alongside any of this coverage.

Common questions

Do I need proof of tribal membership?

Connect for Health Colorado may ask for documents that show you're a member of a federally recognized tribe or an ANCSA shareholder. An advisor can tell you what's accepted.

Does income from treaty rights count?

Income the IRS doesn't tax, such as some treaty fishing rights income, generally isn't reported on the marketplace application.
